Home for the Aged and Infirm, Louisville, KY

Home for the Aged and Infirm, Louisville, KY

"In 1872 the city of Louisville purchased a 225-acre tract of land approximately 6 miles southwest of downtown Louisville in present day Shively for the purpose of building a new almshouse for the poor. The site is today bounded by Seventh Street Rd., Manslick Rd., Berry Blvd., and Gagel Ave. Construction began soon after, and in 1874 the Home for the Aged and Infirm was opened. The building itself had 142 rooms (room enough to house almost 300 wards of the city) and was surrounded by a large farm that was worked by prisoners at the city workhouse. The property also contained a cemetery west of Manslick Rd. (now east of Manslick Rd.) where inmates of the institution and other indigents could be buried. In October 1874 the first inmates arrived at the home. Residents earned their keep by performing tasks such as sewing, cooking, or helping with the gardening. Tragedy struck on January 31, 1879, when the home caught fire and was badly damaged. The inmates were forced to survive in makeshift shelters until December 1879, when reconstruction of the building was completed.
The Home for the Aged and Infirm came under a different kind of fire from a grand jury in June 1922. The home was said to be overcrowded and the grounds in a state of disarray. This resulted in a transfer of some inmates to the City Hospital. The facility then received a quick cosmetic makeover to satisfy the courts. Not satisfied for long, in 1930 another grand jury investigation described the institution's condition as "deplorable" and "filthy", citing several grotesque health code violations.
Things improved in 1933 when Garner G. Denton became superintendent. He immediately instituted several improvements, including cleaning and refurbishing. Denton was also responsible for bringing electric lighting to all the rooms. New floors were laid, and the halls and rooms were plastered and repainted. In addition Denton purchased the home's first refrigerator. Lastly, six more hospital rooms were added to the building. Most important, whereas inmates had nothing to do but "sit and stare" and "wait to die", they now had several activities to engage in. Services for a wide variety of religious persuasions were held in addition to dances, shows, musical performances, and the like.
The Home for the Aged and Infirm was closed in 1953, after which the property was sold and the building razed. In 1961 ground was broken for construction of the Southland Shopping Center where the home once stood. Since the Manslick Rd. cemetery was filled, the city opened a new cemetery for the poor and infirm on Cane Run Rd. next to the Louisville Gas and Electric Co. plant in 1988."

Postcard mailed November 25, 1908 to a Miss Ola Wuertley in Logansport, Indiana. Written on back: "Dear Sister, I drop you a few lines to let you know that I am not dead but I am not feeling well at all but I work every day. I haven't been over to see Grandmother for some time I haven't heard from her either. I am going to E town Thursday if nothing happens. Frank"

Got it from a customer (we own an appliance repair business) and it needed a fairly inexpensive part to get it going and then hubby did some cosmetic stuff and we have a newer, bigger, fancier fridge. 27 cu. ft. with ice and water in the door.
